The Double Challenge

The Experiment: Find a penny, and find a way to double it. Then keep on doubling until I have enough money to pay off my mortgage.

I picked up some free golf clubs today that were listed on the local for sale board. I only had to go 4 km's out of my way, which translates into $0.40 in gas money. I'm sure I'll sell these for much more. The clubs are crappy but the bag is in good condition. I might make as much as $40 for the set. That's 100x my money!

I also forgot to subtract the Google Adwords advertising money - You know - the one that seems to be a waste for me. Well, not entirely true, since it seems one of my spreadsheet ads on google led to a sale, but that's it. All in all, I have to subtract $2.58 from my stake. I'll make much more than this on the clubs, but I'm going to wait a month or two before I do that. Not many people playing golf in negative 40 degree weather here in Canada.

Sold a crappy watch for $5

Someone threw out this old plastic watch. It seemed to still work, so I posted it on the local for sale web page. Bingo! Somone bought it for $5. He lived right on the way to ice hockey, so I don't have to charge myself any gas. It's not much, but every $5 counts.

Almost had a HUGE deal!

I ran across this car in the "for sale" board at work. This guy was leaving the country so he was selling his car real cheap for a quick sale. The price was a lot more than I had in my double project, but I managed to find someone who was in the market for a car. I told him about the amazing deal and he agreed to pay me $100 if he ended up buying it as a finders fee. I'd also teach him how to drive a stick shift and do the test drive for him since he couldn't. Unfortunately he didn't end up buying it but it was a lot of fun to set up the deal. Actually, it was worth a lot less than I thought. In fact, I even thought about buying it with my real money and do it outside my double project. Boy am I glad I didn't. I guess that's the whole point of keeping stuff like this out of my 'real' life.

I'm off to find the next big deal.

Finally Sold the VCR

Well, it took a long time, but I finally sold the VCR. I sold it for 10 bucks (it was just an old one without a remote), but I was selling it for a friend so I only get half. That's five bucks towards the Double Challenge. Not much, but every bit counts. I havn't had any clicks in from those blog lists yet, so I'm not sure how much help they are. Mike seems to have had some luck with a few of them. Maybe I need to try a few more, or maybe it's just a waste of time. Time will tell.

Mike's Money Making Mission!

I have been surfing around a bit and I came across a great site! Mike's Money Making Mission's aim is to try and earn money only using free blogs without any capital outlay. Not only is this a great read (i'm only 3/4 of the way through his posts - he posts almost every day), but a lot of this can be applied directly to the Double Challenge. I have so many things I want to try after reading Mike's blog. The first thing I realised is that he is focused on bringing visitors to his site and I was focused on trying to come up with good products before I think about worrying about the traffic. I think it says it all that he has made about $95 in AdSense in 20 weeks, but in slightly more time I have made a measly $1.80. Sure I have a nice financial spreadsheet, but how many people see the darn thing? I am spending money on google ads, when I should start by doing all the basic things to get yourself noticed that Mike mentions on his blog. I didn't even know that there were such things as blog directories. I know SOOOOOO little, but with Mike's help, I am learning fast. Kudos to Mike and his blog. The other thing I noticed was that he seemed to know exactly where all of his visitors were coming from. I had no idea how he did this, but it seems that there's a great site Extreme Tracking, where you can keep track of all kinds of things. I've already signed up so if you're reading this then I know how you clicked to this site! (probably) I'm off to finish catching up with Mike's blog. I'll be sure to mention all the tips I use.

Another failed VCR sale

Man! I don't know what it is about this VCR. This is one I am selling for a friend and we're going to split the money. He provides the VCR and I do the leg work of selling it. First some guy called me two weeks ago saying he'll buy it but won't be in town for a week. I never heard from him again. And then tonight I had set up for someone to come and purchase it and they never showed up. It really annoys me because someone asked if we wanted to come over for a swim, but we had to say no because we were waiting for this girl to come and get the VCR. I'm only selling the darn thing for about 7-10 bucks, which means I get a whopping 3.5 to 5 bucks. It's getting to be not worth it. BUT every penny counts so I'll keep trying. Still, it kind of makes me mad. Some people have no courtesy for others.

Doubling World Rocked to the Core!

Looks like I sent shockwaves into the world of doublers everywhere with my latest coupon post. (ok, ok, maybe a bit over done but hey, I can feel important, can't I?). It seems not all the other doublers (see my links to the left) agree with me that you can use coupons in your double up projects. Here's the post at the Doubler's Den. Although I think the other's bring up some good points I still disagree. As long as you wouldn't have used the coupon in your "normal" life (ie. if you were never doing the double project) and as long as you still would have bought whatever you are buying then I believe I can use it. As I mentioned at the start of my blog, I am not following the official report word for word. I've set my own rules and I believe I am keeping to them. I will definitely make sure that my 'real' life finances are not affected one cent because of my double up project. As long as I keep to that, then I believe I am not 'cheating' as it were. So..... I will be using coupons, but I will be very careful when I do. Other doublers will decide whether or not they can use them or not for themselves.

Rental Income!

I got paid for storing my neighbor's Jeep in my garage. As I said in previous posts, I'm taking 10% of this because I think 10% of the reason why I did it was for the Double Challenge. That's $5 more for me.

Coupon Clipping!

What a great idea for the lower levels! I have to thank Gerrard at Double Your Way to a Million for a variation on the idea. He's collecting McDonald's coupons or something like that. We don't seem to have the same offer here, so I'm not exactly sure where he's getting these coupons, but this can be done with any coupons! I have never ever clipped a coupon for anything at the grocery store in my life (I think a few times I have brought them to restaurants - buy one get one free stuff). I figure if I make sure I buy what I would have bought anyways, then any money I save with any coupons I bring would be money that can go directly to the Double Challenge! There's no way I would have saved that money if I wasn't doing this project. Can't wait to go home and clip some coupons tonight!
